Mira Hotel’s New Look
When it was time to give Hong Kong’s storied, iconic Miramar Hotel, built in the 1970s, a new look, they turned to Colin Cowie to be the creative director. He oversaw the makeover and re-invention of this 18 story, 600 room hotel with 4 restaurants, a ballroom, spa and roof deck that would be renamed The Mira Hotel.
It was no easy feat and every detail, from the public spaces to the guest accommodations and everything in between, was planned by Colin. The hotel was gutted to its bones and rebuilt. Since most of the architecture of that period was low ceilinged, there were some challenges, but he managed to use them to the project’s advantage.
For example, the rooftop. What started originally as a dome that housed all the air-conditioning with a bad nightclub below turned into the Jaw Dropping Look of this project. From the very moment Colin saw the dome, he realized its massive potential. The dome and AC units were removed and the area was turned into a chic and sleek roof deck, accessorized with an incredible vertical garden inspired by the one at Pershing Hall in Paris.
Another important concept was conceived for the ballroom, designed with a neutral shell so it would accept different colored lights easily, allowing the mood and feeling of the ballrooms to be altered for different types of events at a moment’s notice. Chandeliers were placed in the covered ceilings which housed LED lights to match six different color scenarios created for the ballroom, allowing guests to have a Colin Cowie experience at a fraction of the price.
The pièce de résistance for the transformation of The Miramar to The Mira was an opening night ceremony with a performance by Katy Perry, executed by Colin Cowie and the Events & Celebration division.
