Ingredients- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 medium yellow onion, chopped (about 1 cup)
- 1 garlic clove, minced
- 1 28-ounce can peeled tomatoes with basil
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh basil leaves or dried basil
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 1 teaspoon sugar
Instructions1. Place the oil in a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Add the onion and sauté, stirring frequently, until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and sauté for 3 minutes.
2. Purée the tomatoes in a blender or food processor until smooth. Add to the pan and allow the mixture to come to a boil. Season with the basil, salt, pepper, and sugar. Reduce the heat and simmer for about 15 minutes, skimming off any surface foam with a large cooking spoon.
